Police Officer Walking Up to Stopped DriverNot all drivers need SR-22 auto insurance. In fact, not all drivers even know what SR-22 insurance is. If you're not familiar with SR-22 requirements, there's a good chance you're a safe driver who follows traffic laws. Riskier drivers who make dangerous mistakes are the ones that are required to get SR-22 coverage.

But which drivers qualify as being "risky"? Generally, these are drivers who are involved in the following acts:
  • Getting a DUI/DWI
  • Racking up several driving infractions
  • Driving without a license
  • Driving without auto insurance
  • Multiple accidents in a short time span
If caught displaying these dangerous driving behaviors, you could be required by the court to get an SR-22 certificate. The certificate attaches to your auto insurance (if you don't already have a policy, you'll need to get one) and acts as proof of coverage. Your insurer reports the SR-22 to the DMV, and they're also required to inform the DMV if your auto insurance lapses for any reason. If your coverage lapses, you could face fines, license suspension or even jail time.

While the SR-22 itself only has a small, one-time fee, the fact that you're now considered a risky driver could send your auto insurance rates soaring. Fortunately, once you fulfill your SR-22 (usually from one to three years), your rates can drop back down to a normal level.

You will only need an SR-22 if you're informed of a court-mandated requirement. If this does happen, our agents are able and willing to help you find the right coverage so you can stay on the road.
