Writing a TicketIf you have recently received a ticket for driving under the influence, then it's possible that you may be required to get SR-22 or FR-44 insurance. One or the other may be necessary in order to retain or restore your driving privileges. Yet, it helps to know the difference between the two requirements in order to ensure you remain compliant.

What Is SR-22 Insurance?

An SR-22 isn't car insurance. Rather, it's a certificate issued on your behalf to your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in conjunction with your car insurance. Typically, courts require high-risk drivers — such as those who are accident-prone, have multiple DUI offenses or have multiple traffic violations — to file an SR-22. If you are required to have this certificate, then the issuance of this certificate assures your DMV that you have purchased Liability Insurance.

What Is FR-44 Insurance?

An FR-44 is very similar to an SR-22. An FR-44 is required of high-risk drivers who, through their past driving history, have proven to be a liability risk on the road. The main difference between an SR-22 and an FR-44 is that an FR-44 requires you to purchase additional Liability Insurance. Although the minimum Liability Coverage is sufficient if you need an SR-22, you need more coverage if you are required to purchase an FR-44. Currently, only two states use FR-44s: Virginia and Florida.

How To Overcome An SR-22 Or An FR-44

Driving is a privilege that many people take for granted. However, there are ways you can overcome the need to have either an SR-22 or an FR-44. Since the courts don't require you to have a Certificate of Liability permanently, a good driving history can help you overcome the need to have either certificate. The following are some ways you can drive safer on the roads.
  • Never Drink and Drive: Drinking and driving is illegal because it places both your life and other people's lives in danger.
  • Follow the Posted Speed Limits: Driving the speed limit gives you enough time to respond appropriately to reckless drivers and other road hazards, helping you avoid accidents.
  • Never Text While Driving: One of the leading causes of wrecks is texting behind the wheel. You can avoid accidents by texting while your car is parked.
  • Get Enough Rest Before Driving: Driving while you are tired is similar to driving while drinking. You should always get enough rest before you drive a vehicle.
Getting in the habit of driving safely doesn't take long. After driving safely for a few years, you may see your Auto Insurance rates decrease over time.
