Man Boarding Up Windows On His HomeWhen you know a hurricane is on the way, it's time to take action to protect your home from damaging winds. One of the simplest and most cost effective protections is boarding up your windows. If your home is already equipped with storm shutters, you're good to go. If not, we've got some tips to help you with this task.

Why Board Up Windows?

High winds and flying objects can break your windows, letting in water, debris and powerful wind gusts. If wind is swirling around inside and above your home, the pressure buildup could rip the roof off your home. By simply boarding up your windows, you can help prevent the glass from breaking.

What Should You Use?

Many home improvement professionals recommend plywood, since it's inexpensive and readily available. Make sure the plywood you use is exterior grade and at least 5/8-inch thick. While you're gathering supplies, pick up some screws that are corrosion-resistant and long enough to reach at least two inches into the window framing.

How Do You Install Boards?

The trick to boarding your windows is to perform the task right when the storm is predicted, before the winds pick up. Cut the boards to size, ensuring that each panel will extend at least an inch beyond the framing on all sides on each window. Number each panel and draw an upward arrow so you don't get panels mismatched. Find and mark the location of studs, then hold up the panel and drill pilot holes through it and the framing about every 16 inches. Then go back and drill in the screws.

If hurricanes are common in your area, you can make these boards semi-permanent. Screw stainless steel hanger bolts into the window framing and drill matching holes in the plywood panels. When a storm comes, you can easily mount the panels. Then you can easily remove them for storage.
