An FR-44 is a Certificate of Financial Responsibility form that is state-mandated for drivers who meet certain criteria. The form is filed with your insurance provider to verify that you have auto liability coverage. An FR-44 might be necessary if your driver’s license was suspended due to:
· Driving under the influence (DUI or DWI)
· Driving without insurance
· Repeat traffic offenses
· Reckless driving
State regulations vary, but individuals are often required to carry an FR-44 for three years, after which your FR-44 status will expire. During this time, you must have an active auto insurance policy. Failure to maintain continuous coverage will result in your insurance provider notifying state authorities, with the possibility of losing your driver’s license.
If your state of the Department of Motor Vehicles notifies you that you need to acquire an FR-44, consider it similar to a probation period following a criminal offense. Your insurance provider will file the FR-44 with the state as a proof of insurance. Once filed, your license suspension will be lifted and you will once again be allowed to drive legally, with an FR-44 status on your record.
Your agent is familiar with your state regulations. Ask him or her about how much coverage you need to purchase and what steps to take. Responsible driving during your probation period can result in you gaining all of your privileges back. However, it is still a law to maintain auto insurance coverage.
