DiabetesDo you have diabetes or are you concerned about developing this condition? The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates 29.1 million Americans have diabetes. It also estimates that 8.1 million people living in the country, as much as 27% of the total population, have diabetes and do not know they do.

This could be you. If you have health insurance, you likely have coverage for diabetes pre-screening and care. But, when should you get this type of screening and who needs it?

What Is Your Risk?

Your doctor will determine when it is best for you to receive screening for diabetes. He or she generally uses your family history and current tests and signals to determine if you are at risk for diabetes. Some of what he or she may look for includes:
  • Do you have high blood pressure? You are at a greater risk if your blood pressure is 135/80 or higher. You should at least receive screening at this point.
  • If your doctor has diagnosed hypertension, consider screening on a routine basis.
  • If your A1C value is 6.5 or higher, chances are good you will need ongoing screening. This number represents a three-month look at your blood sugar numbers. Anything higher than a value of 6.5 indicates the presence of diabetes.
  • Individuals who are overweight or obese or live a sedentary lifestyle are also at a higher risk.
  • Those who have a family history of the condition need to have this screening on a routine basis as well.

When Should You Receive Screenings?

Your doctor will make recommendations for screenings. This usually happens during routine visits. Even children can develop diabetes, so age shouldn't be a factor when considering whether you need screening.

Most health insurance covers routine exams at least once a year for policyholders.

Are you at risk? Is there reason to believe you should have diabetes screenings? Take active steps to protect your health from this condition whenever it is possible to do so. Take advantage of preventative care and speak to your doctor about diabetes.
